최병훈의 작품들에서 드러나는 예술적 표현과 기능 사이의 긴장 관계는 일반적으로 '예술이냐 아니면 디자인이냐'라는 상투적인 콘텍스트를 훨씬 넘어설 정도로 강하게 다가온다.
이사무 노구치 스스로가 말했듯이 예술과 디자인을 구분한다는 것은 의미가 없는 것일 수도 있다. 이러한 구분은 작품을 총체적으로 이해하거나 지각하는 데에는 하나의 장애 요소가 될 뿐이다.
The tension between expression and function in his work is so strong that the context, which as a rule defines whether something is perceived as art or commodity, largely recedes into the background.
Perhaps the differentiation between art and design, as Noguchi himself suggested, is indeed irrelevant and only stands in the way of a fully integrated perception, a complete understanding of objects in their entirety.
